My Top Three Books

Reading is one of those habits I had to deliberately adopt and gratefully, one of my most rewarding habits to date. In the journey of life, there are three ways to learn, the first is through your personal life experiences which is a rough and longer path to go, the remaining two are from the life of others and this is possible If you have someone willing to share their meaningful experiences(mentor) or you read their books.

Below are my top three books to date because of how they have been able to impact my life…

1. The Slight Edge — Jeff Olson

Slight Edge is by far one of my favourite books because of how Jeff was able to break down Ideas with stories and explain how the tiny steps we take today do not just add up, but they ripple.

He shares the concept of how simple disciplines can impact our lives overtime, this concept can be applied to the journey of improving your knowledge or getting physically fit, all you just need to do is simply read 10 pages of a quality book daily or workout for 15 minutes daily.

There is a natural progression to everything in life: Plant, Cultivate, Harvest.

If you are a first time reader, this should be your first book, in my opinion, Slight Edge is the book that sets the pace to read other books.

Whatever you want to do today, remember that all you have to do is to start with the simplest step possible.

2. Who Moved My Cheese — Spencer Johnson

Do you ever find it difficult to adapt to change? Well, this book shares a life changing, short and impactful story about how 4 characters that all loved the cheese they found in a maze, then one day the cheese disappears. The story focuses on the fact that things always change in life and the consequences of not adapting. The cheese in this story is a metaphor for what we want in life. Below are the gems I learnt from Who Moved My Cheese:

a. Change is Inevitable

b. Always anticipate change

c. Pay attention to tiny changes

d. Adapt to Change swiftly

e. CHANGE!

What would you do if you were not afraid?

The quicker we let go of old cheese in our lives, the sooner we can begin to enjoy new cheese.

3. The Richest Man In Babylon — George Samuel Clason

When it comes to managing your finance, this book is one of my favourites because the message is simple and easy to follow regardless of your financial situation. Below are the gems I learnt from The Richest Man In Babylon:

a. Pay Yourself First: Before making any expense, 10% of your income is yours to keep(Save/Invest).

b. Wealth is not about your income: It is not about how much you earn but how much you keep(Save/Invest).

c. Leverage Passive income: Don’t just keep your money in the bank with no interest, invest your money so your money works for you.

d. Control Thy Expenditure: Control your expenditure by budgeting your expenses.

e. Increase your ability to earn: Invest in yourself to increase your earning capacity.

My rule of thumb for selecting a book to read is simply by asking myself this question:

“What area of my life do I want to improve right now?”
